View Full Version : Clarification needed on interior rules

I would like to walk on this year... every year i've been telling myself to remember to sign up, and i always forget. The difference being this year, i should actually have a car that will 1) pass tech and 2) not be a gigantic bucket.

But.... as far as i can see, the rules are telling me that i'd get lumped into Top Gun, because i don't have a "finished" interior.

I have a 1992 Celica GT. Unknown miles, stock save for:

1) coilovers
2) intake (solely to replace OEM cracked piping, but i'll take the +1 hit)
3) Camry exhaust manifold to 2.5" catless exhaust
4) front and rear strut bracing
5) a/c removed
6) removed bulk of interior (it was nasty). I have stock front seats, and the dash is there. Not much else.
7) power steering may be removed at the time of the event

What does the interior do to my classing? Barring that, i believe i'm still at a +15 or +16 in F class. I run 200 tread tires, so i take no hits there, and i have stock brakes.

Any help and clarification is much appreciated. :D

It should be in the rules, but IIRC, full/near full interior is required for non-top gun classes.

Yeah, that's what i was reading in the rules as well.... that'll probably be the death knell for my efforts. 80whp and 2400lbs isn't going to do me much good against Vipers and the like. :P

I believe my car gets lumped into STX for SCCA rules, but for different reasons, mainly the suspension and wide(r) tires.

Can i claim exemption on the basis that i'm still slower in a straight line than Bobzilla?

You might be able to play on the sympathy of your fellow F class members since they'll be the ones competeing against you, but by the rules you'd be running in TG... Just toss a 100shot of nitrous on there and you'll be all set for the TG drags :)

I do have the nitrous system available, but i think a 100shot at best would put me at like.... a 14.0. If i'm lucky. This car is SLOW. It has unknown miles, and i get passed by Priuses like i'm standing still. Camry engine in a sports compact car FTW!

Does that mean i should start a thread in the "F" thread and see what they think?

In addition to what you see here, the roofliner is out, and the rest of the stuff behind the front seats is all out now. I do have heavier seats now, if that counts? I have door panels, full dash, front carpet and center console, and stock heavy 90-93 GTS power lumbar seats.

Just let me know who to bribe and how to proceed, and i'll see what happens.

my interpretation that I've been told is that if its a hatchback, the rear seats may be removed to "transport" items to the event.....so go to lowes and buy some carpet and some type of adhesive, and carpet the hell outta it.....the lightest carpet avail btw. I only know this because its what I was told 2 years ago with a much more gutted car I couldn't get running

Throw some carpet covering the floors/sides in there and I would have no problems whoopin ya in F.

That actually sounds like a pretty reasonable solution to me... I have absolutely nothing to do with making rules decisions for the event, but I sense there is some promise in that recommendation :)

Toss a 50# bag of sand (or two) in the back and we'll call it good

IMO, in your setup, you're really only missing about 35 lbs of weight, unless your backseat was made of lead, so I don't really have a problem with it.

35-45lbs max, still weighs more than a 92 GT COUPE, which would be in the same class, and the coupe is a much stiffer chassis.

If you guys are all cool with it, i'd rather not try to fasten carpet down and make a big mess. With my ineptitude, it would probably fly in my face on the highway and make me crash before i get there.

We'll see what pans out. In the meantime should i make a butt-kissing thread so i can try to guage how many of F class will approve, instead of just you guys?

Or Bob, are you going to be down in Indy anytime before the event? I'll trust what you think about the car if everyone else is cool with that. I know for a fact it's slower in every application except for maybe top speed than your Swift. :duh:

This is the same reason why I can't compete. Although yours has alot more interior than mine. a few yards of carpet from Joanne fabrics and you'd be golden. Mine on the other hand..... I spend forever tryinig to get the dash out to get to the front carpet. That craps not going back in.

I still drive it on the street too. Street car should only mean registered and insured and able to be driven on public streets. All IMO of course

I'm "in Indy" every day.... 96th/Keystone Monday through Friday... but I'm not the one you gotta convince here. I already know I'm gonna whoop ya....

I'm a noob in a halfway capable car (i think). After you posting what you did in the swift recently, i'd say you're a bit above noob status. Plus it'd be cool to meet someone other than the Honda crowd that seems to attract itself to me. No, i really don't care about how you think your disgusting LS-swapped crapbox on ebay coils can take me in the quarter mile.

I gotta start from the bottom sometime, right?

 Actually headed to Grissom Sunday for a test-n-tune. It'll likely be the best $50 I spend this year. Seat time, seat time, seat time. Also, check out Dave at Performance Driven down near Kentucky Ave and 465. They're not your "normal" speed shop.

DAve does fantasmic work.... He's doing my rollbar/harness bar in. In fact, Dave has my Swift right now. Finishing up the alignement/shaving the tires.

Interior must appear as close to what it was when it rolled off the assembly line.

Last year I went through and quickly carpeted the entire rear of my car. Just grabbed some cheap fabric from Wal-Mart and used some 3m adhesive spray and started working it around. Looked great and I was accepted into the competition with open arms that day.

You can always go to JoAnn Fabrics or Lowes, etc... and pick up some carpeting to cover bare sheet metal. ;)

Hate to dig up an old thread, but i saw a Civic running D-class on Saturday that plainly didn't have a complete interior. Is this now a defunct rule and i'm free to run the Celica next year in F class? Was told previously that due to lack of interior panels, the Celica is a Top Gun car.

I noticed that too, the bright red one with the engine swap done......the old ruling back from Winged Warrior II, which I think may be before our current rules committee members, was that hatchbacks were allowed rear seat removal only, still had to have carpet and side panels for constraints of getting everything to the event you needed cargo-wise

whenever the ti makes a return, the cage design will restrict it to a front seats only vehicle, but the rest of the back will be finished in carpet/panels

There was also a Subaru with no license plate running class A soooo just hang around long enough and you can probably just do whatever you want

Eh, i was mainly curious i guess, we've got a year til next event, and i'll worry about it then. My car isn't a whole lot more gutted than that thing was. He didn't have the rear interior panels in from what i saw, and i've currently got my door panels and front carpet in at least.

No worries really, just wondering. :)

idk really, I'm interested if its still legal to have the rear seat out of hatchbacks for transporting things needed for the weekend
